UEFA Champions League 2024/25 matchday 2 for PSV sees them welcome Portuguese giants Sporting CP to the Phillips Stadion on Tuesday October 1st at 8pm GMT. PSV will be desperate to get on the board in this season’s new League format after their 3-1 defeat away to Juventus on Matchday 1. Sporting for their part will look to build some momentum for the League Phase by securing another positive result after their 2-0 win over French side Lille on matchday 1.

Our 3 Predictions for PSV vs Sporting CP

  • Prediction 1: Match to Finish in a Draw – 3.58
  • Prediction 2: Both teams to Score – 1.50
  • Prediction 3: Total goals to be over 3.5 – 2.36

1st Prediction for PSV vs Sporting CP: Match to end in a Draw – 3.58

Both sides come into the match in good domestic form, with both leading their domestic Leagues after 6 matches. PSV will be eager to bounce back after their matchday 1 defeat, but Sporting should be capable of travelling to Eindhoven and picking up a vital away point ahead of a winnable away match against Sturm Graz on matchday 3 of the Champions League.

2nd Prediction for PSV vs Sporting CP: Both Teams to Score- 1.50

Both PSV and Sporting have started the season in fine goalscoring form and while I would rate Sporting’s defence as a better unit than that of their Dutch opponents, I fully expect both sides to be able to find the back of the net when they meet on October 1st.

3rd Prediction for PSV vs Sporting CP: Total Goals will be over 3.5

I would certainly expect goals in this game between two sides that know how to find the back of the net. So far this season, PSV have scored 28 goals in just 8 games in all competitions, while Sporting have hit the net 27 times in 8 games to date.

Full Preview of the Game: Last Results

PSV may have lost their opening Champions League match against Juventus, but Peter Bosz’ side are unbeaten so far in this season’s Eredivisie with the defending Dutch champions 6 wins from 6 so far. Sporting are also 6 wins from 6 in Liga Portugal and won their opening Champions League game 2-0 against Lille.

This game starts a run of three home games in the Champions League for PSV against sides they should be able to compete with while for Sporting picking up at least a point in the Netherlands would help maintain momentum after their matchday 1 victory.

The sides have never met in the UEFA Champions League but did face off in the group stage of the 2019/20 Europa League with Sporting winning in Lisbon 4-0 and PSV winning their home match 3-2.

I expect goals when these two clash on October 1st, but I think Sporting can get a point, which should set them up nicely ahead of a winnable game against Sturm Graz on matchday 3.
